Retiring “Community”
I’ll be retiring the Community tab of DetailsPro in a forthcoming update. After several years of stagnation, I’m replacing this with a new way to explore and discover templates you can be inspired by. I originally made this to allow anyone to create a profile and post designs. While it wasn’t a total flop, it didn’t live up to what I wanted it to be.
What is replacing it?
There will be new system for browsing and downloading templates. My goal is to have lots of great, free SwiftUI templates that are up-to-date for the latest OS’s. Where the community component made this a bit unmanageable to achieve, the new system will directly take into account what I’ve learned.
There will also be the benefit of a more clear and simple security story. Today, DetailsPro does not require signing up or providing any personal contact information. DetailsPro also doesn’t store your files, since they’re in your connected iCloud account or directly on your device if you’re not using iCloud. The community component muddied this with the optional accounts, file storage, and so on.
Available til March 2027
In an upcoming update, the tab will go away. If you posted designs or created a profile, you’ll be able to Sign in with Apple in the Settings area of DetailsPro, download your designs, and delete your account until March 31st, 2027. After that date, all submitted designs and profiles will be deleted.
Removing Analytics
The next update will also completely remove the anonymous analytics that have been in the app for a while. Things like how many times a community file was downloaded, a template was used, or a new file was created. I have found over the years that I don’t have a lot of use for this information. If a thousand new files were created in a month or ten thousand new files were created in a month, so what? I myself will often return to the same file I’m working on over and over (there was no analytics event for that.) Does that mean I’m hurting the numbers? You can see where I’m going with this.
DetailsPro is self-funded and here for the long haul. I’m not concerned with short term, demonstrable growth. It’s just not that kind of app. Further, for an app that is meant to be such a trusty tool for people doing their most important work, I just don’t think tracking little events here and there even fits in to the ethos.
Towards Data Not Collected
With the Community tab replaced and analytics removed, there will no longer be any sort of data collected by the app and I’ll be able to put the Data Not Collected sign up on the App Store listing.
I’d like to work on DetailsPro for the next ten years, and in that time there’s nothing more that I need from the wonderful people who use this app than the occasional emails with feedback.
